Журналист, литератор, историк. Стал известной в стране фигурой благодаря своим публикациям в журнале "Харперз мэгэзин" [Harper's (Magazine)]. Удостоен Пулитцеровской премии [Pulitzer Prize] за книгу "Через широкую Миссури" ["Across the Wide Missouri"] (1947). Среди его книг - "Америка Марка Твена" ["Mark Twain's America"] (1932), роман "Кривая миля" ["The Crooked Mile"] (1924)
